Preparing For My Appointment

Infertility

My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for over a year now, with no success. I have been thinking about going on fertility drugs. Can you prescribe them, or do I have to go to a specialist?

I do a lot of fertility work. You should really have a complete physical--and your husband, too--before you think about taking fertility drugs. You may have a problem that is easily corrected. Some women who exercise a lot have trouble getting pregnant, so cutting down on physical activity can reverse the problem. Fibroids can cause problems, as can anorexia. These are just a few of the things that should be checked out. With some couples, it is just a matter of having sex at the right time of the month. We like to rule all these other causes out before we start thinking about fertility drugs, because they put a slight strain on your ovaries, which can increase your chances of having ovarian cancer later in life.
